WAGON AND TOWER LADDER RESPOND TO THE 2ND ALARM FIRE AT SUBURBAN APARTMENTS IN SPRINGETTSBURY TOWNSHIP

Monday, November 21, 2011  From the York Daily Record:

A fire in an apartment building in Springettsbury Township Saturday afternoon displaced about 30 people, a fire official said.

One person was inured in the blaze at Suburban Park Apartments, said Jay Van Pelt, battalion chief with York Area United Fire/Rescue Services. A state police fire marshal was investigating to determine the blaze's cause.

Van Pelt said the person was taken to a local hospital but would not give further information about the person's injuries.

The flames were contained to one building - a gray brick structure with "2681" on a green awning in front. The building contained 11 apartments, Van Pelt said, and each sustained either fire, smoke and/or water damage.

The American Red Cross offered assistance to the residents, several of whom gathered in small knots alongside onlookers outside yellow police tape that officers had roped between trees to hold back the crowd.

The call came in at about 1:45 p.m., Van Pelt said, and when fire crews arrived, smoke and flames were pouring from a third-floor balcony. The blaze got so bad that firefighters on the third floor had to evacuate.

By 2:30 p.m., the column of smoke arched northward over Route 30, as more and more fire trucks and emergency crews arrived. By then, the roof was mostly gone, and what was left was a bow of shingles dripping water.

TRUCK AND ENGINE COMPANY RUN FIRE AT PERRYDELL FARMS IN THE TOWNSHIP

Tuesday, November 15, 2011  From the York Daily Record:

The occasional "moo" and the sound of hooves on metal nearly drowned out the hum of the diesel engines.

Refugee Perrydell Farm dairy cows were evacuated from the York Township farm after a fire ripped through its milking parlor Monday night.

The cows were heading to a farm in Windsor Township in trailers towed by pickup trucks. That farm recently stopped using its milking parlor, and its owner offered to allow Perrydell farmers to use it, said Greg Perry, a co-owner of Perrydell.

"I'm very grateful for the help," Perry said, as he looked through a pile of wet papers retrieved from the partially burned-out milking parlor.

Township firefighters and crews from surrounding departments were dispatched to the 90 Indian Rock Dam Road farm at 7:55 p.m.

"When we pulled up, flames were blowing out of three of the front windows," said Capt. Scott Bowman of Goodwill Fire Company.

Crews made an aggressive attack on the fire in the 30-by-250-foot building and had it out shortly after arriving at the scene, he said.

No one was injured in the blaze, and York Area Regional Police are investigating its cause.

DEER SEASON IS HERE PLEASE KEEP AN EYE OUT DURING YOUR TRAVELS THIS TIME OF YEAR

Monday, November 14, 2011  Did you know that Pennsylvania ranks 4th in the nation for collisions with deer? Deer are entering their mating season this time of year and are more active than usual. Here are a few tips to avoid them on the road:

  • Be more cautious at dusk and dawn when they are more active – drive at safe speeds.
  • Use your high beams whenever possible and watch for the telltale reflections of their eyes.
  • Signs are often used at areas known to be frequented by wildlife- pay extra attention in these areas!
  • If you see one, chances are there are more. Firmly apply your brakes and stay in your lane. Swerving to avoid a deer will often cause a driver to lose control which can be just as dangerous.
  • Be alert for other vehicles suddenly stopping, maintain a safe following distance.
